Is the Trinity in the Book of Exodus?
Exodus is the Bible book that gives the history of the choosing of the ancient Israelites as God’s chosen people, or nation, and their entering into a special covenant with God to bind that relationship. The Trinity doctrine is often said to be the main doctrine of Christianity. Is the Trinity in the book of Exodus?
IS JESUS CHRIST THE “I AM’ OF EXODUS 3:14?
“God said to Moses, ‘I am he who is.’ And he said, ‘This is what you are to say to the Israelites, “I am has sent me to you.”‘ God further said to Moses, ‘You are to tell the Israelites, “Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.” This is my name for all time, and thus how I am to be invoked for all generations to come”—Exodus 3:14,15 NJB. “I am” is clearly shown to be Yahweh, the ‘God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’
“God says to Moses, ‘I AM THAT WHICH I AM.’ He also says, ‘Thus you say to the sons of Israel: I AM has sent me to you'”—Exodus 3:14 LSV
Let’s notice the Greek Septuagint Version (LXX) rendering of this verse:
“God said to Moyses, ‘I am The One Who Is.’ And he said, ‘Thus shall you say to the sons of Israel, “The One Who Is has sent me to you”‘”—Exodus 3:14 A New English Translation of the Septuagint (LXX) (NETS). We can see from this LXX rendering of Exodus 3:14 in Greek that the usual rendering of, “I Am has sent me to you,” is a poor translation of Exodus 3:14.
Based on Jesus’ saying, “I am”, as most translations render it at John 8:58, and ignoring the context, Trinitarians make the leap to claim that Jesus Christ is the “I am” of Exodus 3:14, and he therefore is God Almighty. In Exodus 3:14, Almighty God makes a statement about his identity, whereas in John 8:58, Jesus explains that he was alive before Abraham was born. However, if saying “I am” makes a person God, the healed blind man must be God Almighty, because he said “I am” at (John 9:9 NAB).
EXODUS 6:2-3 AND ACTS 3:13 PROVE JESUS IS THE SERVANT OF THE “I AM”, ALMIGHTY GOD
An extremely powerful proof that Jesus Christ is not the “I Am” of Exodus 3:14 is the following:
“The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus the one whom you delivered and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him”—Acts 3:13 LSB; NASB
“God spoke further to Moses and said to him, ‘I am Yahweh and I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name Yahweh, I was not known to them'” (Exodus 6:2,3 LSB). In the scriptures, only Yahweh is said to be “God Almighty”. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is never identified as Yahweh.
“God Almighty”, who is “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,” identifies himself as “Yahweh” at Exodus 6:2,3. We also notice in Acts 3:13,26; 4:27,30 that “Yahweh”, who is “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,” has a “servant” (Greek, “pais”) named “Jesus”. Thus, FOUR times Jesus is named as the great I Am’s “servant”. This means that “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”, the “I AM”, cannot be Jesus Christ, because Jesus is “his servant” (“pais”). Yahweh is not a servant to anyone, but Jesus is Yahweh’s servant. Additionally, “Our Lord”, “our God”, is specifically referred to as having “his Messiah” (Revelation 11:15; NIV; 12:10 NIV), who is obviously Jesus Christ.
“My servant: . . . Scholars are of the opinion . . . that the original concept reflected in the words identified Jesus with the suffering Servant of the Lord of Is 52:13 – 53:12. [NAB note on Acts 3:13]. Jesus is referred to as “my servant” at Isaiah 52:13 (NIV), which again emphasizes the fact that he is Yahweh’s “servant”. Therefore, Jesus Christ cannot be the “I am” of Exodus 3:14, and cannot be Almighty God, because he is God’s “servant”. This fact also refutes the Trinitarian claim that he and his Father are “equal.” Jesus said, “the Father is greater than I am” (John 14:28 GWT). Jesus is presented as God’s “servant” (Acts 3:13,26; 4:27,30) in the Bible, not as his “equal.”
Without Jesus being Almighty God, there is no Trinity doctrine in Exodus.
OTHER SCRIPTURES IN EXODUS
“Then the angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them” (Exodus 14:19 LSB). Some say the Angel of the LORD in the Hebrew Scriptures is no different from other angels. But He is far different. In fact, He is God Himself.” (Trinitarian Website). It is very awkward for Trinitarians to believe that Jesus is eternally co-equal and co-eternal with God, and yet he’s never mentioned in the Old Testament (OT), but the holy Spirit is mentioned in the OT. When we read the New Testament, however, we cannot miss the active role that Jesus plays as Savior and Head of the Church. To support their eternal Triune God dogma, Trinitarians have concocted the unscriptural idea that Jesus, as their “second person of the Trinity”, was “the angel of God,” who is mentioned a number of times in the OT. While Jesus has existed “from of old, from ancient times” (Micah 5:2 NIV), there is no scriptural evidence he was “the angel of God”. In fact, Hebrews 1:5 indicates that Jesus is not an angel. Trinitarians contradict their own dogma by claiming Jesus was “the angel of God”.
“I am Yahweh your God . . . ‘You shall have no other gods before Me'” (Exodus 20:2-3 LSB). “You shall not worship any other god, for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is jealous God” (Exodus 34:14 LSB). The Trinity, and its “God the Son”, are worshipped by many. However, the one and only “Yahweh your God” is a “jealous God” (Exodus 20:5 LSB), who does not tolerate the worship of any other gods, including the Trinity and “God the Son”.
“This is your god, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 32:4 NASB). The golden calf idol was asserted to be their god. “Tomorrow shall be feast a feast to Yahweh” (Exodus 32:6 LSB). These idolators claimed their revelry would be in honor of Yahweh. Trinitarians claim, with some degree of similarity, that their “God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit” Trinity is the one God Yahweh. They put Yahweh’s name on their “strange god” (Psalm 44:20 LSB), very similar to the Israelite idolaters putting Yahweh’ name on their golden calf idol. Worship of the Trinity is as idolatrous as calf worship!
“Yahweh said to Moses . . . ‘no man can see me and live'” (Exodus 33:17,20 LSB). Trinitarians assert that the Son of God, Jesus Christ, is Almighty God, Yahweh. Lots of people saw Jesus while he was on earth. However, the New Testament confirms that, “No one has ever seen God” (1 John 4:12 NIV), thus eliminating any possibility that Jesus could be God.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
“Yahweh has called by name Bezalel . . . and He has filled him with the Spirit of God” (Exodus 35:30-31 LSB). Trinitarians claim “the Spirit of God” is a person, the 3rd person of their Triune God. However, “filled him with the Spirit of God” is not language that describes a person. Without the holy Spirit being a person, there is no Trinity in Exodus.
CONCLUSION
We’ve examined a number of relevant scriptures, and discovered that neither the Son of God, Jesus, or the holy Spirit are Almighty God. Therefore, the Trinity doctrine is not in the book of Exodus. In fact, the scriptures we’ve examined in comparison with the entire Bible reveal that the Trinity is a ‘false doctrine’ (1 Timothy 1:3).
