Are “God the Son” & “God the Holy Spirit” Biblical?

Christ in Glory with Four Saints and a Donor (c. 1492 painting by Ghirlandaio) depicts God the Son seated in Heaven.

Catholics and most Protestant groups embrace the Trinity as one of their primary, if not their main, doctrine, including the titles “God the Son” and “God the Holy Spirit”. Are these titles Biblical?

JESUS’ EXAMPLE

Jesus left “an example” for us to “follow closely” (1 Peter 2:21 NIV), which we should endeavor to do, albeit imperfectly.

Jesus publicly confronted and exposed false teachers and their “false doctrines” (1 Timothy 1:3). For example:

“How terrible for you, blind guides! You teach, ‘If someone swears by the Temple, he isn’t bound by his vow; but if he swears by the gold in the Temple, he is bound.’ Blind fools! Which is more important, the gold or the Temple which makes the gold holy? You also teach, ‘If someone swears by the altar, he isn’t bound by his vow; but if he swears by the gift on the altar, he is bound.’ How blind you are! Which is the more important, the gift or the altar which makes the gift holy?”—Matthew 23:16-19 GNB

TRUE AND FALSE DOCTRINE

In their attempt to follow Jesus’ example, some Christians strongly feel the need to expose such “false doctrines” and “doctrines of demons” (1 Timothy 1:3; 4:1 LSB) for the benefit of “all who” want “to know the truth” (2 John 1:1). We, at BibleAuthenticity.com, are among them, so that is why so many of the posts on this site have to do with exposing “the truth” and the unscriptural falsehoods about the Trinity doctrine.

The Bible says, “there is only one God, the Father” (1 Corinthians 8:6 NASB). In contrast, the following is quoted from the Southern Baptist Convention’s (SBC) Statement of Faith and Beliefs, 2000:

The eternal triune God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being.

Even though Trinitarians vehemently deny it (“they are not three Gods, but one God“), the fact is that their Athanasian Creed claims that, “the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God“, and, in effect, means they actually believe in three Gods. With their unbridled acceptance of promotion of their Trinity God, much of Christianity has, unfortunately, “bartered for another god” (Psalm 16:4 LSB; NASB).

FORMAL FAITH STATEMENTS OF “GOD THE SON” & “GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT”

The largest Christian group in the United States, is the Protestant denomination the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). The SBC’s Statement of Faith and Beliefs, 2000, as quoted below, goes on to say:

B. God the Son

Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus perfectly revealed and did the will of God, taking upon Himself human nature with its demands and necessities and identifying Himself completely with mankind yet without sin. He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His substitutionary death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion. He ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He is the One Mediator, fully God, fully man, in whose Person is effected the reconciliation between God and man. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission. He now dwells in all believers as the living and ever present Lord.

C. God the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, fully divine. He inspired holy men of old to write the Scriptures. Through illumination He enables men to understand truth. He exalts Christ. He convicts men of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. He calls men to the Saviour, and effects regeneration. At the moment of regeneration He baptizes every believer into the Body of Christ. He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His presence in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ. He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.

ANALYSIS

While “the Son of God” and “the holy Spirit” are mentioned many times in the scriptures, we find that none – not a single one – of all the scriptures cited by the Southern Baptist Convention above mention either “God the Son”, or “God the Holy Spirit”. In fact, none of their cited scriptures give any support whatsoever to such concepts.

CONCLUSION

The unscriptural terms “God the Son”, and “God the Holy Spirit” are in reality just “disgusting idol worship” (Jeremiah 13:27 NLT), and such terminology is sickening to some Christians, in fact, disgusting and nauseating even thinking about such grossly unscriptural ideas.

No, the titles “God the Son” and “God the Holy Spirit” are not Biblical.
