How Should John 1:1 Be Translated?

There is some controversy as to how should John 1:1 be translated. Trinitarians often use the verse to support their contention that Jesus is the eternal Almighty God. John 1:1 is often translated as, “and the Word was God”, and used to assert the Son of God, Jesus Christ is Almighty God? How about “a god”?

The traditional rendering in English is:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
