Bible Knowledge Solves Trinity Enigma

There is no doubt that Almighty God, the God of the Bible exists! But what is he like? Jesus said, “God is a spirit” (John 4:24 ESV). But what exactly is the spirit called God? The Trinity doctrine is usually presented as the main explanation of God, and is widely believed to be true because it is said to be in the Bible. But, even its most scholarly adherents and proponents admit they don’t really understand it, calling it a “mystery”. Can Bible knowledge solve the Trinity mystery?

“Jesus taught us of the life of God. He said that there are three Persons in the one God and that each of these Persons are equal to the other. He also revealed the names of these three divine Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life.”—-AFC.org

“The mystery of the Trinity differs from other mysteries because it is not accessible to anyone except God (1 Cor. 2:11). The doctrine of the Holy Trinity states that there is One God who exists eternally as three distinct divine persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”—Reverend Friar Bonnie Nikem Anusiem, Ph.D.

“We firmly believe and confess without reservation that there is only one true God, eternal, infinite, and unchangeable, incomprehensible, almighty, and ineffable, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, three persons indeed, but one essence, substance or nature entirely simple.”—Lateran Council IV, 1215 CE

With statements like this, what is the average person, who no specialized training in the Bible, supposed to do?

“Most Christians are so intimidated by the Trinity they throw their hands up in surrender when asked to explain it.”—The Youth Pastor

“The doctrine of the Trinity is not fully comprehensible to human minds. The doctrine of the Trinity, along with the doctrine of the incarnation, is one of the great mysteries of the Christian faith. This means that it exceeds the ability of finite human minds to fully grasp.”—Ligonier Ministries, Feb. 15, 2023

Is God really so difficult to understand?  Is God really a Trinity? Do humans really ‘not have the ability to fully grasp who God  is’, as Trinitarians say? What is this Trinity?

“The Bible shows very clearly that there is only one God, and yet that there are three personal distinctions in His complex nature, traditionally referred to as “three Persons in the Godhead”—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Each is distinct from the others but never acts independently. They are one in nature and purpose.”—-Billy Graham

But notice what the famous evangelist Billy Graham admits about the Trinity:

“This mystery is called the doctrine of the Trinity, though that term is not used in the Bible. The teaching, however, is present in seed form in the Old Testament and is revealed explicitly in the New Testament. Note passages such as Matthew 28:19; John 10:30, 14:26; 2 Corinthians 13:14. Our finite minds cannot understand or explain this mystery of God, which is nevertheless a fact. We must accept the truths found in the Word of God by faith even though we ourselves cannot comprehend them fully; read Hebrews 11:1, 3, 6 and 1 Corinthians 2:5-10, 14; 13:12. It is really not surprising that the infinite God should be complex in His nature beyond the ability of finite humans to comprehend!”—Billy Graham

He claims “this mystery of God ” is “a fact”, and is in the Bible, even though, “our finite minds cannot understand or explain this mystery of God”. Surprisingly, none of the scriptures he lists as “proof” texts gives any information about this mysterious Trinity

“The impious man destroys his neighbor through speech, But through their knowledge the righteous are rescued” (Proverbs 11:9 Tanakh)
The Bible says ‘the righteous are rescued through their knowledge’! This gives us hope that we can be rescued from the ultimate penalty of sin, which death, through Bible knowledge. But, can we really understand God? Let’s see:
“The Lord will give you understanding in everything” (2 Timothy 2:7). Does this “understanding in everything” include understanding God himself? What does the Bible tell us?
“We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20 NASB)
According to this scripture, we CAN indeed gain understanding of “HIM who is true”, that is, “the true God.” What Jesus said in his prayer to his Father in very instructive in this regard:
“Father . . . This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one you sent, Jesus Christ” (John 17:3).
According to Jesus, our eternal life depends on our knowing the only true God, and also the one he sent to earth, Jesus Christ. So, we not only can know God, we absolutely must know him to get eternal life. Jesus, and the Bible itself, would not say this if were not possible. From these scriptures, we can perceive that Bible knowledge solves the Trinity enigma. How?
Well, for starters, notice that Jesus calls his Father “the only true God”, and that even Jesus himself is not called “the only true God.”
“The only true God” is not some mysterious 3-in-1 Trinity “Godhead”. No, “the only true God” is the Father of Jesus. Jesus, in quoting Deuteronomy 6:4said: “The Lord our God is one Lord” (Mark 12:29 KJV). Also, Galatians 3:20 tells us: “God is only one” (NASB). Nowhere does the Bible say that God is three.
So, Bible knowledge really does solve the Trinity enigma! There are many other articles on this website under the Category of “Trinity”. For more information on this subject, please take a look at them.

  1. This Trinity business is getting boring. The best interpretation is this: God (the Father), Jesus Christ (the Son), and the Holy Spirit are three different persons who work together on a team, called the Trinity, period.
