Why Many Do Not Believe

Why Many Do Not Believe

Many do not believe in God
Why do many people not believe in God?

Why do many people not believe in God or his word the Bible? Why are so many people lacking faith? A person with genuine Bible-based faith is referred to as “one who sees Him who is invisible.” (Heb 11:27 CSB)

In one special case, Elisha’s servant was given the ability to see otherwise invisible angelic forces, arrayed against the Syrian army: “Elisha prayed: ‘Yahweh,’ he said, ‘open his eyes and make him see.’ Yahweh opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw the mountain covered in fiery horses and chariots surrounding Elisha” (2 Kings 6:17 NJB). Although miraculous things like this don’t happen today, God, Jesus, and angels are just as real, and we can see evidence of this with “the eyes of [our] understanding” (Ephesians 1:18 NKJV) “by faith” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

When “Doubting” Thomas was shown extraordinary proof of Jesus’ in his resurrected state, and then confessed belief (John 20:27-28), Jesus then said to him: “Because you have seen me you have found faith. Happy are they who find faith without seeing me.” (John 20:29 REB)

How can this be? “For all that can be known of God lies plain before their eyes; indeed God himself has disclosed it to them.” (Romans 1:19 REB) How has he done this?

“Ever since the world began his invisible attributes, that is to say his everlasting power and deity, have been visible to the eye of reason, in the things he has made.” (Romans 1:20 REB) God has made available more than enough evidence of his existence, both in the physical world here on earth and in the universe, to the reasonable person.

How can this be since most intellectuals, scientists, PhD’s, etc. are atheistic or agnostic?  Even though “they boast of their wisdom… they have made fools of themselves.” (Romans 1:22 REB) How? Why? “They have exchanged the truth of God for a lie” (Romans 1:25 REB), that is, the lie that God doesn’t exist. As Jesus said, “When they see what I do,” that is God’s creation, “they will learn nothing,” because they don’t connect it to God and his creation. “When they hear what I say” from the Bible, “they will not understand” (Mark 4:12 REB), that is, not believe it. Why? They don’t want to.
